The Biltmore Estate was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895. The main house has a whopping 178,926 square feet in floor area! That is incredible, especially considering that it started out as a summer cottage. Much of the house was inspired by French chateaus, but with an American twist to them. It is considered to be one of the first indoor pools in America and it continues to function as a pool to this day. Although many other homes had indoor pools, the one at Biltmore is notable for its luxurious design. It was designed with gold-plated fixtures inside the pool, stained glass windows, Roman columns in an arch around the outside of the pool, and bronze statues of ancient gods adorning the arches. It is even said that there are mosaics on the floor of the pool.
Fourth, one should visit the winery and taste some wine. The Biltmore Winery is located on the estate and has been in operation since shortly after George Vanderbilt’s death. Some of its wines include chardonnay and two reds: a pinot noir and a cabernet sauvignon. There is a tasting room in the winery where some wines are available for purchase by visitors to the estate.
Fifth, one should see some of Asheville’s many gardens. There are several greenhouses located on the estate grounds and they contain many different types of flowers. One greenhouse contains cacti from all over America, another contains ferns, and another has orchids.
